benefit businesses and corporations. >> but a new abc news poll released overnight shows what a daunting challenge democrats face heading into midterm elections. emily schmidt is joining us from washington with the latest numbers. >> reporter: this poll is filled with a lot of firsts. abc news/"washington post" poll that shows 92% of americans, nine out of ten of your neighbors, think this economy is in bad shape. and what's more, potentially bad news for democrats. voters seem to say they're tired of the status quo. this week, president obama is pitching a new economic plan, with the hopes of winning. >> i think yes, we can. is more inspiring than no, we can't. >> reporter: but a new poll shows more people saying about the president, no, he hasn't. for the first time, most voters, 52%, disapprove the way mr. obama is handling the job overall.nt y the president has made the economy worse. >> i'm going to keep fighting

every, single day. every, single hour. every, single minute, to turn this economy around. >> reporter: the first idea, $50 billion for transportation projects. tomorrow, the president will propose a $200 billion tax writeoff on new investments and corporations. republican house leader, john boehner, says we don't need more government stimulus spending. we need to end washington democrats' out-of-control spending spree. >> i don't think there's anything our president or congress can come up with that would provide a big jolt to the economy by election day. >> reporter: the poll shows public dissatisfaction with the democrat-controlled federal government is at its highest level in 18 years. supporters say, give the president time. >> it's just like losing weight. the weight comes on really fast and easy. but when you're trying to correct it, it is a slow process. >> reporter: but the midterm elections are now just two months away. and here is one more thing from the poll. it shows that likely voters say they are more likely to vote for

the republican candidate in their district by 53% to 40%. that is a record margin. rob? >> emily schmidt, in washington. thanks, emily. major religious leaders hold a news conference later today in washington, as controversy heats up over the planned burning of the koran. a florida minister says he plans to go ahead with the direction of the islamic holy book to mark the 9/11 anniversary. that's despite a warning from the top commander in afghanistan that burning the koran could put u.s. troops in harm's way. martha raddatz reports from kabul. >> reporter: the crowd in downtown kabul reached nearly 500 with protesters chanting, long live the koran. an effigy of pastor terry jones, from the tiny florida church, was lit on fire. the protesters, well aware the pastor's inflammatory comments. >> islam is an evil religion. >> reporter: but anger has spread far beyond pastor jones, with choochbts death to america, echoing through the crowd.

minutes later, rocks were hurled at a passing u.s. military convoy. the u.s. commander in afghanistan, general david petraeus, is outraged by the threat to burn the koran, saying in a statement that it could "endanger troops. and it could endanger the overall effort here." we spoke in kabul with the former vice chief of staff of the army, general jack keane. >> it is outrageous. and it is insulting to muslims. but it's also insulting to the soldiers, for what they stand for and what their commitment is to the muslims in this country. >> reporter: pastor jones vowed he would go ahead with the koran burning. >> what we are doing is long overdue. we're revealing, again, the violence of islam that is much, much deeper than we would like to admit. >> reporter: jones has gotten more than 8,000 followers on facebook. but a page condemning him has 20-times that number.

that has not calmed the protesters here in kabul. and there are fears that the protests planned for tuesday could be even larger. martha raddatz, abc news, kabul. after slamming into mexico's northern gulf coast last night, tropical storm hermine is now hovering over south texas. it's already churning up the waters from brownsville to galveston, along the texas coast, creating some dangerous conditions for swimmers there. hermine is bringing heavy rain and winds up to 65 miles per hour. it's expected to drop up to a foot of rain as far north as dallas. forecasters say flash flooding will be a major problem throughout the day. a powerful wildfire that started in the foothills of colorado is now spreading in that region. the fire has destroyed some homes and even forced the evacuation of at least 1,000her. others. it started monday in four mile canyon, which is northwest of boulder. since then, winds of up to 45 miles per hour have spread flames in several directions.

so far, no injuries have been reported. investigators in west virginia are trying to figure out the cause of a fire which killed 27 racehorses. four barns near the racetrack in charlestown burned to the ground. workers described a frantic scene, as they tried to pull horses to safety as the fire spread. they were able to save nearly 30 of the animals. at least one person has been killed and three others injured after a small plane crashed on a residential street in southern nevada. authorities say the single-engine plane burst into flames in a crash in henderson monday. witnesses say it crashed upside down. and local residents had to douse it with hodeses before they could rescue the trapped passengers. now, for this morning's weather from around the nation. as we mentioned earlier, tropical storm hermine is pounding most of texas today. other stormy spots include the rest of the gulf coast,rest of louisiana into georgia. most of florida and around the great lakes. >> the rest of the country is mostly seasonable and pretty

and welcome back, everybody. time, now, for a check of market activity, starting overseas. tokyo's nikkei average dropped 0.8% today. hong kong's hang seng is up in late trading. and in london, the ftse opened lower. meanwhile, wall street will be back in business today after, of course, taking labor day off. the dow did gain almost 300 points last week. the nasdaq was up 80. bp is investing in online ads, apparently to combat damage to its reputation from the gulf oil spill. a google poll revealed in june, bp spent $3.6 million in ads in google's search results. before the spill, bp was spending about $57,000 a month for online ads. the justice department is investigating google's plans to buy ita software. ita powers some leading online sites, including kay yas, hotwire, and sidestep.

there's concerns whether rivals would have access to ita services if google acquires the company. there is still a fear that google would steer the searchers away from other sites. they're not calling it ellen online. but aol and ellen degeneres are teaming up. they will share traffic, content and promotions with aol sites. aol has been trying to make deals with content providers to complement its own content. does money make you happy? a new survey find the answer is actually yes. the study published by the national academy of sciences, found that people's happiness rose with their income levels, until they're earning about $75,000 a year. after that, things pretty much level off. >> not surprising, right? >> not at all. when we come back, spying on the british royal family. how a paper dug up dirt on the princes. and who is more likely to have senior moments? men or women?

[ woman laughs ] now, for a look at morning road conditions. in texas, interstates 10, 35 and 37 will be a mess, with heavy rain and some flooding. and plan on heavy wind along i-90, from chicago to minneapolis. >> and if you're flying today you can expect some airport delays in seattle, minneapolis, detroit, chicago, memphis, dallas and houston. a pioneer in the civil rights movement has died. jefferson thomas was one of nine black teens known as the little rock nine. they bravely stood up to an angry, white mob in 1957 and became the first black students to enroll at little rock central high school. thomas had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. he was 67 years old. extortion charges have been dropped in the bahamas at the request of actor john travolta.

an ambulance driver and his attorney faced a retrial for trying to get $25 million from travolta after the death of his son. now, travolta says he no longer wants to face the pain of a new trial. critics of british prime minister are calling into he denies accusations when he was the editor of a british tabloid, he encouraged reporters to hack into celebrity cell phones. as miguel marquez reports, those celebrities include prince william and prince harry. >> reporter: when prince william pulled a tendon and the story ended up in "the news of the world," he wondered how. when prince harry visited a strip club, the same tabloid voted verbatim a teasing message sent by his brother on his cell phone. "the news of c world" claims it was the work of one rogue employee. but the accusations continue.

claims the celebrity power couple, david and victoria beckham's" messages were intercepted. model elle macpherson's phone, too. >> such was the culture of intimidation and bullying, that you would do it. >> reporter: during a lengthy investigation, "the new york times" spoke to sean hoare, a former" news of the world" reporter said he hacked into phones. his editor knew it. and the editor works for the british government. what started off as another nasty tabloid story here in london quickly became a hot, political issue. the former editor of "the news of the world," andy coulson, is now the communications director for the prime minister. >> and i don't condone the use of phone hacking. nor do i have recollection of instances where phone hacking took place. >> i stood by andy. and been requested to tap phones or hack into them. he was well aware that the practice exists. >> reporter: in parliament, the conservative home secretary, the nation's top cop, deflected

calls for a new investigation. but the left-leaning labor party here smells blood. >> surely, if this murky affair rumbles on, will the prime minister come and make a statement, relieving coulson of his job? >> reporter: a tabloid scandal where the tabloid is the headline. and has the potential to become the first political scandal for the new government here. miguel marquez, abc news, london. and staying with news now from across the pond. a fascinating reel of newly-discovered, rare, color footage from the second world war blitz is now being shown for the very first time. the short reel shows some of the damage inflicted on london by german bombing campaign. the footage, which was found in an attic, has been released to coincide with the 70th anniversary of that blitz. two, new studies are shedding some light on the amount of waste in the health care system. more than $55 billion a year

goes towards defensive medical practices. mainly unnecessary tests and procedures to protect doctors from malpractice claims. the other study finds that more than a quarter of doctor visits for things like fevers, stomachaches and coughs take place in emergency rooms. older men are more likely than women to suffer from senior moments. a new study finds 19% of men aged 70 to 89, had mild cognitive impairment, which falls in between normal forgetfulness and dementia. that's compared to only 14% of women. people with this problem can carry out everyday activities and generally realize they are forgetful. jerry lewis has once again raised some big bucks for charity. contributions and pledges from this year's labor day event total almost $60 million. the money, of course, goes to the muscular dystrophy association. lewis, who is 84 years old now, has been hosting that telethon for more than four decades. time, now, for sports news and highlights from the biggest

game from the first week of the college football season. here, now, is espn news. >> i'm paul severino with this espn news update. it sounds like a strong statement to make. but even in the season's first week, it's a must-win for boise state, as number three takes on number ten, virginia tech. first quarter. kellen moore, lobbing, back corner of the end zone. tommy gallarda makes a great catch. they had to review this down on the field. see it again. does, in fact, make the grab. 17-0, boise state. they led 20-14, on the half. ryan williams gets it out to the nearside and in. virginia tech takes a 21-20 lead. later in the third quarter, boise state on their own 29 yard line on third and one. d.j. harper is going to pick up the first down and then some. rumbles 71 yards for the touchdown. boise state's extra point was blocked. so, the broncos hold a 26-21 lead. they continue to go back and fourth.

now, a look ahead to the stories we'll be watching on this tuesday. tropical storm hermine is pounding much of texas today, packing winds of up to 65 miles per hour. but the biggest problem will be flooding. the storm is expected to drop up to a foot of rain, from the coast north through dallas. firefighters in boulder, colorado, will try to contain a voracious wildfire that's already claimed dozens of homes. at least 1,000 homes have already been evacuated and more residents could be asked to leave. we'll get an update of progress of construction on new york's world trade center site, nearly nine years after it was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. billionaire george soros is expected to announce today that he is giving $100 million to human rights watch. the first of some really big gifts still to come. and former jetblue flight attendant, steven slater is in court today.

true. it involves a nurse and a patient, randomly assigned to her care. jeremy hubbard explains. >> i love you. >> i love you, too. >> reporter: family circumstance tore them apart. now, a miraculous coincidence has brought them back together. >> you did good. >> reporter: when victor peraza came to this new york city two weeks ago, a veteran nurse named wanda took note of her new patient's name. she told her story on "good morning america." >> i completely froze. i was stunned. i said, i have to go into this room and look at this patient. i said, what are your children's names? and right away, he said, i have a daughter named wanda. and the second he said that, i just burst out crying. and i ran out of the room. >> reporter: it was her father, who had walked out of her life in 1969. he and her mother married young. there were problems. and they split up when wanda was just a baby. >> i came back into the room. i said, hi. i'm wanda.

i'm your daughter. i'm your daughter. and he said -- he said, i know you're my daughter. and within less than five minutes, i just gave him the biggest kiss and the biggest hug because i was so happy to finally meet my dad. >> reporter: in the tear-filled days that have followed, wanda has introduced victor to the grandchildren he never knew. and she's given him something he never expected, forgiveness. >> we're not going to dwell on the past because that's not important. he's here. and we're just going to enjoy the short time that we're going to have together. >> reporter: their time together is short because victor is terminally ill. he's being treated here for the final stages of cancer. he turns 61 later this week. and wanda just prays he'll make it until then, hopeful she'll finally get to celebrate a birthday with her father. jeremy hubbard, abc news, new york. >> it is amazing, too, how lives can cross. just in the nick of time. >> it's a beautiful gift, to see that. and to see they're living in the moment and taking every minute. >> yes. >> that's great. that's what's making
